Traditional Newari Cooking Activity

It is an irrefutable fact that the best way to experience and understand local culture is at the dining table. In Nepal, this space is where loved ones gather to share food, happiness, love, laughter, stories, and other experiences. It is a place to relax and feel at home. We believe that one of the best ways to understand a society is through its palate. Thus, a traditional Newari cooking activity can be a delightful and immersive experience for guests.

What to Expect:
  1. Introduction to Newari Cuisine: Learn about the history and cultural significance of Newari cuisine and key ingredients used in Newari cooking, such as beaten rice (baji), black lentils, buffalo meat, and local spices.
  2. Cooking Demonstration: A Professional Chef or local cook leads the session.
  3. A few traditional dishes are focussed:
Yomari: A steamed dumpling filled with sweet molasses and sesame seeds.
Chatamari: Often referred to as 'Newari pizza', it's a rice flour crepe topped with minced meat, egg, and spices.
Momo: Nepali-style dumplings filled with meat or vegetables.
    Bara: Savory lentil pancakes.
Chhoyela: Spiced grilled meat, typically buffalo or chicken.
    Aalu Sandheko: Spicy potato salad.
  4. Hands-On Cooking: Guests are divided into small groups for a more personalised experience and guided through the preparation and cooking processes.
  5. Tasting and Dining: Enjoy the prepared dishes together in a communal setting.
  6. Cultural Narratives: Stories and anecdotes about Newari festivals and customs related to food are shared.

This activity not only enriches the guests' culinary skills but also provides a deeper cultural connection, enhancing their overall experience at The Nanee.
